AC Repair or Replace? How Long Should an AC Unit Last?
AC Repair or Replace?
It’s almost summertime! Carolina summers have some doozies when it comes to high temperatures! ACs tend to break down when they run the most. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re facing that not so fun dilemma. So what happens when your AC breaks down and you’re left in a predicament of what to do? Should you replace it, or can it last a bit longer? If you’re facing an AC repair, it’s important to weigh all the options to decide what’s best for your comfort and your wallet. We’re here to help!
Air Conditioning System Repairs
Let’s start with the obvious. When your AC unit starts giving you trouble – loud noises, blowing hot air, or won’t turn on – it’s tempting to go ahead and patch it up. Sometimes a simple fix is all that’s needed! But what if it’s a major repair? A compressor or evaporator coil can get up there in price, and there’s always the possibility another part could malfunction (a matter or when, not if!) When you start to look at the major repair cost, it may make sense to invest in a new AC unit with a full warranty and years of reliable service.
Age Of AC Units
Consider the age vs. the average life expectancy of an air conditioning system. Even though AHRI says an air conditioner should last 12-15 years, this varies based on humidity and location. In hotter climates such as the southeast U.S., that number can be significantly lower (8-12 years). If you happen to live at the beach, it could be half that and result in frequent breakdowns (but hey, at least you get a view of the ocean)!
Efficiency of the Current Air Conditioner
The Department of Energy says that even if your air conditioner is only 10 years old, you may save 20%-40% of your cooling energy bills by replacing it with a newer model with a higher energy efficiency rating. Consider the cost of the repair and the potential savings on your energy bill! When financing a new system and taking these factors into account (let alone potential future repairs!), it could be a good idea to weigh the option of air conditioning replacement.
Expense of freon – reduced production
Delaying replacement of an HVAC system can potentially shelling out a larger chunk of change in the future. Throughout the years, the EPA has phased out R-22 refrigerant and even stopped its production altogether. Currently the process has begun to phase out the current standard refrigerant of R-410A. The American Innovation and Manufacturing Act of 2020 signaled the beginning of the phase out of R-410A. There was a 90% production allowance starting in 2022, and that drops to 15% by 2036 and beyond. The law of supply and demand: less production = higher cost.
So, what should I do?
While proper maintenance can significantly extend the life of your AC unit, there comes a time when replacing your air conditioner is the best option. If your AC unit is over 8 years old, requires frequent repairs, or isn’t cooling your home effectively despite regular maintenance, it might be time to invest in a new one. A new ac system with a higher energy efficiency can save you money on energy bills and better fit your cooling needs. But sometimes a little fix is best!
